Taking your very first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) class may cause a bit of anxiety but it’s nothing to worry about. It’s completely normal to feel worried since you’re on the verge of joining a new community and about to start learning new skills.
For those unfamiliar with BJJ, it’s a self-defense system and martial arts form that focuses heavily on grappling with an emphasis on ground fighting. BJJ teaches a smaller, weaker individual how to defend himself/herself against a stronger, bigger, more aggressive opponent through the use of leverage and technique. BJJ is also an effective choice for those looking to improve their overall health and fitness while learning a new skill. With that being said, here’s what you can expect in your first BJJ class:
Everyone in attendance is there to learn
One of the best ways to get the most out of your first BJJ class and every class after that is to show up with a beginner’s mentality. Be comfortable with starting from square one and come in with a willingness to learn. Remember that everyone attending class is there to learn and improve as well so don’t hesitate to ask for help if you’re lost or confused. Your instructor is there to guide you and address any concerns you have in every BJJ class you participate in.
You’ll make new friends
BJJ is undeniably a social sport where you’ll quickly make new friends! As you work together with your partners, you’ll learn that you have to trust your drilling partner to safely and effectively practice moves with you. BJJ is not easy and nothing brings people closer like overcoming challenges together. Successfully executing moves in class with the assistance of others on the mat will bring a level of satisfaction and comradery that can be hard to find in other environments.
What you’ll need to wear to class
There two different types of gear for BJJ classes so it doesn’t hurt to ask ahead of time if the class you’re attending is a gi class or a no gi class. A gi is a traditional uniform similar to what you’ve seen worn by other martial arts such as karate. If you don’t own one, you don’t stress about having one on your very first day.
For no gi classes, you can wear shorts, spats, or even gi pants for your lower body. For your upper body, you can wear tank tops, rash guards, or t-shirts. Also having your own set of gloves will put you one step ahead.
Patience will always pay off
Did you know it takes the average BJJ practitioner 10 years to achieve the rank of blackbelt? It takes time to become proficient so be patient with yourself. Don’t expect to be an expert with any move or technique by the end of your first class or even your first month of training. Have fun and enjoy the journey of learning!
