We’re often asked, “What is MMA?”, at Absolute MMA! MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts and it’s one of the fastest-growing sports in popularity. Thanks to well-known organizations such as the UFC and Bellator, more people are exposed to MMA where they can watch competitors utilize skill sets from various Martial Arts such as Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, and Wrestling.
The history of MMA
Some believe that MMA goes as far back as the ancient Greeks who created Pankration in approximately 648 BCE. Pankration provided an opportunity for fighters to utilize Wrestling and Boxing at the same time. Kicks were also allowed and the fight didn’t stop when an opponent went down to the ground. It only ended when a fighter surrendered or was unconscious.
In 20th century Brazil, the combat sport named Vale Tudo (anything goes) was extremely popular. One of the most popular fight events was known as the Gracie Challenge. This was a fight where brother Helio and Carlos Gracie would take on any challenger so they could prove the effectiveness of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. These matches grew large enough to the point where they took place in stadiums so more people could watch.
The Gracie family’s success led them to produce the very first UFC champion in UFC 1, Royce Gracie. Since UFC 1, MMA has continued to grow in popularity with fans and fighters all around the world.
Rules and regulations of MMA
Sanctioned MMA fights follow the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts. Fights take place in a cage or a ring. Fighters do not wear headgear or shoes but use padded fingerless gloves. MMA fighters can punch, throw, grapple, or kick an opponent. There are restrictions such as strikes to the spine and back of the head. Groin strikes, biting, eye-gouging, and kicking/kneeing the head of a grounded opponent are also not allowed.
A fighter can win by ending the match by knocking out or submitting his/her opponent. Victory can also be achieved by winning rounds awarded by a panel of three judges according to the 10-point must system if the fight goes the distance.
Non-championship MMA fights are three five-minute rounds with a 60-second break in-between each round. Championship fights are five rounds total.
There are also weight classes for both men’s and women’s decisions. The amount of available weight classes and specific weight limits can vary by region.
