We will also teach you positions of control to access submissions or a dominant position for striking.

What is wrestling?

If you don’t know what Wrestling is, it’s a combat sport that uses throws, takedowns, pins, and holds to control your opponent. Wrestling is one of the oldest sports in the world. Aspects of wrestling can be found in different combat sports such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts, and Sambo. Wrestling is physically and mentally demanding. It requires a high level of intense focus and full commitment with every move you make on the mat. Wrestlers are known for their drive and determination due to the nature of the sport.

Solo exercises you can do to become a better Wrestler

To help you be in the best physical shape for Wrestling, here are five bodyweight exercises that will do everything from improving your conditioning to preventing injuries:

  1. Burpees: This exercise is one of the most effective of all time. It works your body from head to toe. You engage multiple muscle groups every time you do a burpee. The muscles being worked include your glutes, core, triceps, and back. Burpees do a great job at getting your heart rate elevated and increasing your work capacity as a competitive athlete.
  2. Pull-ups: Wrestling constantly engages your pulling muscles. This is true with various Wrestling movements from going for a single leg takedown to executing an arm drag. By doing pull-ups, you improve your ability to control your opponent and strengthen your grips. Make pull-ups a regular part of your strength and conditioning program.
  3. Alligator crawls: One of the best ways to improve your core strength and overall stamina is doing alligator crawls. You’ll strengthen your arms and shoulders with every repetition. Alligator crawls are an effective exercise to add to your warmup routine to get your heart pumping and prevent injuries when working out.
  4. Sprawls: Going to the mat then having to get back to your feet is exhausting when you have to do it continuously. With every sprawl, you’re training your body and your mind to stand back up and recover. Drilling sprawls on your own helps you develop greater muscle memory and increases your overall stamina.
  5. Circle shuffles: Adding circle shuffles to your training regimen will make it easier for you to move laterally and change directions. This exercise is helpful in increasing your athleticism and overall defense. The movements you do in circle shuffles help you in grappling competitions and MMA fights.

If you didn’t start Wrestling as a child, it’s not too late to learn. In fact, Absolute MMA owner and head trainer Professor Rob Handley started Wrestling as an adult to compliment the Martial Arts skills he already had. He wanted to connect his striking abilities to his grappling abilities in order to become a more complete fighter.
