What is Wrestling and how can it benefit me?

Wrestling is one of the oldest Martial Arts in the world with official Wrestling competitions going as far back as ancient Greece. We teach Wrestling here at Absolute MMA in West Jordan, Utah as a Combat Sport. You’ll learn effective grappling techniques you can use both in organized competition (i.e. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournaments, Mixed Martial Arts) and in self-defense. In this blog post, you’ll learn different ways of how Wrestling can benefit you and be used in a practical way.

Can Wrestling be used in self-defense situations?

Wrestling is a highly effective form of self-defense. It helps you connect your striking skills and your grappling abilities in a seamless way. You learn how to dictate whether or not a fight stays on the feet or on the ground. With Wrestling, you learn how to use pressure and control to neutralize your attacker. You’ll have the tools needed to pin down your opponent and have better positions for landing devastating blows from the top like punches and elbow strikes.

Can Wrestling be used in different Martial Arts competitions?

Depending on the rules of the event, Wrestling can help you win in an organized competition. Here are two of the Combat Sports you can use skills you’ve gained from Wrestling to help you achieve victory:

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: Wrestling will help you in both Gi and No Gi competitions. You’ll have a better understanding of how to move your body. With Wrestling experience, you will also handle the intensity and pace that comes with competing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

MMA: MMA requires you to put multiple skillsets together all at once. Not only do you have to know how to strike but you also have to know how to take a fight to the ground or stay on your feet. Wrestling will help you have the tools to defend against takedowns and even maintain dominant positions on the ground.

Will Wrestling help me improve my physical conditioning?

Due to its demanding nature, Wrestling can help you accomplish your fitness goals and get you in better shape. Wrestling engages your entire body doing everything from making you work both your pushing and pulling muscles at full intensity. There is also a range of mental and emotional benefits you’ll receive from learning how to Wrestle.

Physical benefits of Wrestling

As mentioned before, your overall physical health will improve with consistent Wrestling training. Here are several of the top physical benefits of Wrestling:

  • Improved cardio: Your overall stamina will increase and you’ll be able to physically handle the demands of Wrestling. Since you won’t be as concerned with physically keeping up, you can focus more on the learning techniques. It won’t be as difficult to develop great technique when you’re not trying to catch your breath in every class.
  • Greater flexibility: From the warmups to drilling moves in class, your mobility and flexibility will get better. Your ability to move and bend without getting injured will increase as you train consistently.
  • Stronger body: Wrestling engages your entire body including your legs, core, and upper body. You use your whole body to do everything from sprawls to double leg takedowns. Over time, you’ll feel your body change and get stronger. Your ability to execute techniques under pressure will improve.
  • Weight loss: If one of your goals is to lose weight, Wrestling can definitely help you do that. You’ll start to shed pounds with consistent training over time. As you put in the work to improve, you’ll also want to eat better to speed up your recovery in between classes.

With Wrestling, you’ll quickly start seeing positive changes in your health within the first month of training. Your body will start to adjust to the training and your capacity to do more will increase.
