Let’s start with a brief history of Judo. After you learn about Judo’s history, we’ll go over other topics like what to expect in your first Judo class.
History of Judo
Judo’s beginnings go back to Japan. Jigoro Kano is credited as the father of Judo in the late 1800s. Kano, who began learning JuJutsu as a teen, founded his own dojo in February 1882. Over time, Kano continued to develop his techniques and curriculum which he shared with his students.
Over the past century, Judo has grown internationally. In 1964, Judo became an Olympic sport. This has led to greater awareness of the grappling art and more practitioners than ever before. Outside of Judo-specific competitions, Judo techniques can also be found in other combat sports like MMA and BJJ.
Today, Absolute MMA carries on the techniques and traditions of Judo in West Jordan, Utah. You can expect to learn in Judo classes everything from gripping strategies to throwing a resisting opponent.
What to wear and bring for Judo class
Judo gis and belts are the required Judo class. If you don’t own a Judo gi, it’s ok to wear athletic wear like shorts and a T-shirt. Training will be done barefoot on the mats so you won’t need to bring any athletic shoes.
Along with dressing appropriately for Judo, we also recommend you bring a personal water bottle. This will allow you to hydrate as needed during class.
What to expect in your Judo class
We recommend that you show up at least 5-10 minutes before the start of class. This will give you time to sign in at the front desk and get dressed. You’ll walk in through the front and take your shoes off before walking further into the gym.
At the start of class, you’ll begin to do warmups for the first 10-15 minutes. Warmups are designed to safely get your heart rate up and joints ready for training. Your instructor will guide you through different exercises to also help you mentally be ready to learn.
After warmups, you’ll learn Judo techniques and strategies for the next 45 minutes. The class portion of the training session will help you be more confident on your feet. You’ll also be able to improve your timing and distance management through drilling.
Randori is at the end of the formal lesson portion of Judo class. It’s a freestyle practice that gives you and your teammates a chance to apply the techniques you’re learning. You’ll be able to have fun and learn from everyone on the team!
