Let’s breakdown the main differences between striking and grappling:
Key differences between striking and grappling
What makes striking different from grappling? Fighting in striking arts takes place on the feet. Grappling is focused on what to do when the fight is taken to the ground.
In striking-focused arts, strikes may include punches, kicks, elbows, and knees depending on the ruleset. Arts such as Muay Thai allow for sweeps and clinching. Emphasis is placed on accurate striking, footwork, and head movement. The rulesets of organized striking matches tend to favor stronger, faster fighters.
When it comes to grappling, the focus is on controlling and submitting opponents using proper technique and leverage. Grappling styles like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu empower a smaller fighter to take on a stronger, more aggressive opponent. Grapplers focus on closing the distance, successfully executing a takedown, and submitting their opponent. Submissions can happen different ways such as arm bars, heel hooks, strangles, and shoulder locks.
