Known by many as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Gracie Jiu Jitsu is a time-tested system of self-defense designed to help people stay safe in a real combat situation. Here at Absolute MMA, we teach Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with our roots in tracing back to founder and Grand Master Helio Gracie who trained our Grand Master, Flavio Behring. Gracie Jiu Jitsu gives a smaller, weaker person the tools to defend himself/herself against a stronger, more aggressive opponent.
The history of Gracie Jiu Jitsu
The origins of Gracie Jiu Jitsu goes all the way back to the early 1900s in Brazil where the Gracie family started to study traditional Martial Arts such as Japanese Jiu Jitsu and Judo. Their exposure to these arts happened thanks to Mitsuyo Maeda who had arrived in Brazil from Japan in 1914.
The youngest Gracie, Helio, was able to develop a style that placed great emphasis on ground fighting and the use of leverage. Helio’s adjustments on the techniques at the time made it possible for smaller people to defeat more powerful attackers. These techniques include submissions such as chokes and joint-locks which can be used in a sport format and self-defense situations.
With Royce Gracie, one of Helio’s sons, winning the 1st, 2nd, and 4th Ultimate Fighting Championships, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu’s popularity started to achieve a global reach. Royce demonstrated the fighting style’s effectiveness against a wide range of Martial Arts including Wrestling, Taekwondo, and Karate.
Our lineage tying us to the beginning of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is through Grand Master Flavio Behring. Grand Master Flavio Behring started training at age 10 under Grand Master Helio Gracie who still shares his knowledge today. Flavio Behring Jiu Jitsu is a reflection of Grand Master Flavio Behring’s dedication to helping students and instructors learn and grow.
Today at Absolute MMA, Professor Rob Handley continues to carry on Grand Master Flavio Behring’s legacy as a 4th degree Black Belt. He received his Black Belt in 2003 from Grand Master Flavio and Master Sylvio Behring.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training at Absolute MMA
As mentioned before, we teach Brazilian Jiu Jitsu here at Absolute MMA. The class format we have starts off with warmups followed by instruction then live sparring aka rolling.
Warmups include jogging, lunges, and stretching to get the heart rate up and prevent injuries. The instruction portion of a class covers submission attacks, defending against attacks, and drilling moves. Live sparring then gives students a chance to apply what’s been taught in class.
Our instructors are always available to answer any questions you may have during class. You won’t have to worry about feeling out of place since we’re to help you accomplish what you hope to achieve by learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
