What is Kickboxing?

Kickboxing is a standup striking art that involves kicking and punching. Kickboxing can be used in self-defense scenarios and also in organized competition. There is a variety of Kickboxing styles that can be found around the world in countries such as Thailand, Japan, and Holland. Before we cover how Kickboxing can help you in self-defense situations, we’ll share more background information on Kickboxing:

Kickboxing in organized competition

Organized competition for Kickboxing is typically done in a ring with a referee and three judges. Depending on the ruleset of the competition, more than punches and kicks are allowed. American Kickboxing tends to be limited to kicks and punches only above the belt while other rulesets allow for knee and elbow strikes.
The use of Kickboxing isn’t just limited to Kickboxing-only events. Elements of Kickboxing are also used in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Some notable examples of fighters who use Kickboxing in MMA are Israel Adesanya, Tai Tuivasa, and Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

Equipment for Kickboxing

For Kickboxing class here at Absolute MMA where you’re doing pad work and heavy bag work, you’ll need 14-16 oz gloves for men, 10-14 oz for women and 8-10 oz for Juniors, shinguards, and hand wraps. To spar, you’ll need the equipment previously mentioned plus a mouthguard. You’re welcome to wear headgear if you’d like during sparring. Gear is available for new Absolute MMA students who are trying out Kickboxing for the first time.

Now that you have a better understanding of what Kickboxing is, let’s go over Kickboxing in self-defense situations.

How can Kickboxing help you in self-defense situations?

Yes, Kickboxing can definitely help you in self-defense situations. Training at Absolute MMA will teach you different techniques and skills such as:

  • Creating distance between yourself and an attacker through footwork: It’s difficult for someone to physically harm you in a hand-to-hand combat situation if they can’t reach you. If you can get away and avoid a physical altercation altogether, that’s the best option for you. In our Kickboxing classes, you’ll learn how to move defensively and take steps to avoid receiving damage.
  • Creating distance between yourself and an attacker through kicks, punches, elbows, and knees: If you’re in a hand-to-hand combat situation where someone can physically make contact with you, you have an understanding of striking that can help you get away. Our instructors here at Absolute MMA will teach you the proper striking techniques you can rely on when you need them.
  • Improved ability to think and process information while under stress: Being able to move defensively and strike when given the opportunity isn’t easy when you’re getting attacked. However, you’re more likely to know how to handle yourself when you train on a consistent basis.

While no single Martial Art will help you in every self-defense scenario, learning Kickboxing will provide you with tools you didn’t have before. You’ll feel more confident in being able to handle yourself in tough situations with the right training.
