The origins of Muay Thai
Muay Thai’s roots go as far back as the 16th century when it started as a peace-time Martial Art that eventually became a skillset used in war. The standup system also grew as a form of entertainment as fighters used Muay Thai with fans in attendance. Over the years, Muay Thai eventually developed consistent rulesets and Thailand built its first official ring in 1921. Rounds were tracked and referees enforced the rules in each organized match.
The 1980s and 1990s saw Muay Thai reach new levels of popularity with the best fighters getting paid as much as 200,000 baht or more. Muay Thai’s global appeal is evident in the 3,800+ Muay Thai gyms around the world and its usage in professional MMA.
The art of 8 limbs
There are more striking tools available in Muay Thai compared to Boxing. Boxing is limited to punches whereas knee strikes, elbow strikes, kicks, and punches are allowed. Fighting in the clinch and sweeps to knock an opponent off his/her feet is allowed in Muay Thai competition.
