9 hygiene rules every fighter needs to know

A key part of staying healthy and being a great teammate is following hygiene best practices. It’s important that you do your part to follow health and safety precautions to protect yourself and everyone you train with here at Absolute MMA. Proper hygiene provides many benefits which include keeping everyone free from illness and skin infections.

When every member of your gym maintains proper hygiene, you increase your opportunities to train hard and have a great time while doing so. After all, getting sick holds you back from putting the work in at the gym!

Here’s a quick list of hygiene rules you need to follow to do your part in keeping yourself healthy while protecting your teammates:

  1. Stay home if you’re sick: Don’t leave your home until you’re fully recovered. Take the time to rest and recover. Doing so will protect your training partners from whatever is preventing you from being at full health.
  2. Shower regularly: Taking regular showers helps you smell better and prevents the spread of germs from you to your training partners. You also will feel a lot better after a tough training session and smell better as well. Be thorough and scrub your body from head to toe to clean your pores since dirt can be trapped in your skin.
  3. Wear deodorant: Don’t be that person who doesn’t apply deodorant regularly.
  4. Trim your fingernails and toenails: Always keep your nails trimmed and clean. You can easily cut your training partners when you don’t maintain your nail length. Keep your fingernails and toenails short.
  5. Dental hygiene: People will be less likely to train with you if your breath is overwhelming. Improve the smell of your breath by brushing your teeth, using mouthwash, and even chewing some gum before coming to class.
  6. Wash your gi and no-gi gear: There’s nothing quite like the despicable experience of rolling with someone who doesn’t wash their gi or no-gi gear. Your grappling gear can easily become a breeding ground for bacteria which results in nauseating odors. Gi’s can especially become smelly and crusty due to dirt and sweat being trapped in the fibers.
  7. Wipe down and sanitize your mitts and shinguards: Always sanitize your striking gear. It’ll prevent unwanted odors and the spread of bacteria. Air them out when you get home to help them smell better.
  8. Clean your mouthpiece: Take a minute to clean your mouthguard with soap and warm water after each use. You will be less likely to get sick since your saliva can be a great catalyst for the growth of germs on your mouthguard.
  9. Always wear footwear in the bathroom: Do not use the restroom without wearing footwear. Protect yourself and everyone else by not spreading restroom floor residue all over the gym. There are slip-on sandals here at Absolute MMA you can wear in case you need a bathroom break.
