Meet Joel Haro! A real estate agent by day, Joel also trains and teaches at Absolute MMA in West Jordan, Utah.
Joel started training at Absolute MMA in 2011 as a junior in high school. As a competitive high school wrestler, Joel found training at Absolute MMA an effective way to stay in shape all year round. He currently has 14 amateur fights (10 MMA fights & 4 kickboxing fights) and shares his knowledge with his Absolute MMA teammates as a coach.
1. As an Absolute MMA instructor, what’s your mindset and approach to teaching athletes?
Joel Haro: My goal is to create a fun atmosphere so everyone attending will want to come back and keep training. I want people to take me seriously but not to the point where you can’t talk to me and ask questions. I try to be as informative as possible and be myself so everyone feels comfortable in class.
I love seeing students learn new skills and having fun!
2. What’s your best piece of advice for beginners?
JH: Don’t feel like an idiot and worry about messing up! You’re learning a new skill so don’t be too hard on yourself. I was terrified on my first day but everyone worked with me. Everyone is here to work with you and help you succeed.
3. How do you stay motivated on the tough days?
JH: Professor Pedro Sierra keeps me excited to train! He always lets me know that he’s happy to see me in the gym.
Everyone at Absolute MMA is welcoming which helps especially on those rough days. When everyone is encouraging, it makes training worth it even when you don’t want to be there.
4. Where can we expect to see you in 10 years?
JH: In 10 years from now, I’m hoping to have 20 pro fights. Fighting in the UFC would be cool as well. I know that I can keep training and working because I know everyone at Absolute has my back, win or lose.
5. When you’re not training or working, what are you doing for fun?
JH: When I’m not working or training, I’m hanging out with my girlfriend, Lauren, and my 4 dogs. I also enjoy playing Fortnite to relax after a workout.
